RULES FOR WRITING SUMMARIES FOR ARTICLES
A summary is a type of abbreviated presentation of a scientific text. The purpose of a summary is to attract the reader’s attention and arouse their interest using minimal linguistic means: communicating the essence of the study and its novelty. Both should be stated in the summary, not implied. All scientific articles in the journal must have author summaries. An abstract is a specific genre of scientific text presentation that defines the structure of its content. The difference between an abstract and an article in genre implies a difference in the form of presentation. While an article should present logical reasoning and evidence for a thesis, an abstract should state the results of the analysis and evidence. Therefore, the wording in the abstract should be general yet informative, i.e., built on predicates (“what is said”) rather than thematic concepts (“what is said”).
There are requirements for the length of the abstract and the structure of the content. For articles published in the journal “Bulletin of DSMA,” the optimal length of an author’s abstract in Russian and English is 200-250 words, including the following sections: introduction, purpose, material and methods, results, and conclusion or findings.
An abstract is always accompanied by keywords. A keyword is a word in the text that, when combined with other keywords, can represent the text. Keywords are used primarily for searching. The set of keywords for a publication (the search image of an article) is similar to the abstract. Abstracts with keywords must be presented in both Russian and English.
A high-quality abstract in English allows:
- a foreign scholar to become familiar with the article’s content and determine its interest, regardless of the article’s language or the availability of the full text;
- to overcome the language barrier for a scholar who does not speak Russian;
- to increase the likelihood of the article being cited by foreign colleagues.
A Russian-language abstract written for scholars who read in Russian. High-quality abstracts are essential in today’s information-saturated environment.
